香港科技大學人文學部講座教授（榮休）。香港中文大學學士（哲學），哈佛大學碩士（東亞研究）及博士（歷史學）。從事現代中國政治文化史、政治空間與儀式及民間文化等方面的研究。著有Going to the People: Chinese Intellectuals and Folk Literature, 1918–1937（中譯本《到民間去：中國知識分子與民間文學，1918–1937》）；War and Popular Culture: Resistance in Modern China, 1937–1945；《新文化史與中國政治》；《地標：北京的空間政治》；Mao’s New World: Political Culture in the Early People’s Republic（中譯本《毛澤東的新世界：中華人民共和國初期的政治文化》）。
