If you want to learn anything about selling, you’d better go to America. Americans could sell ice to Eskimos or central heating to Africans. I discovered this for myself when I first went to the States during a student holiday. |
|
In those days, it was quite difficult for British citizens to go to America. For a start, British people could only take $150, and even at that time you couldn’t do much with that. So, without much thought, I took a job selling magazines door-to-door. |
|
At the beginning I didn’t actually expect to be doing this. Selling magazines door-to-door is one of the most difficult and unpopular jobs available in America. The fact was that I was down to my last penny. For breakfast I just ate cornflakes. My lunch and dinner combined was either a hotdog or a hamburger. And, of course, there was no way I could get more money out of England. When you’re hungry, you’re not too particular. You take any job you can get. |

如果你想學怎麼賣東西，最好去美國走一趟。美國人有辦法向愛斯基摩人兜售冰品，也能把暖氣賣給非洲人。這是我學生時代利用假期展開平生首次美國之行時，自己的一番體悟。 |

當年，英國公民要去美國可不容易。英國人起先只能攜帶150美元，而這個數目即使是在當時也派不上多少用場。所以，不消多想，我就去找了一份挨家挨戶推銷雜誌的工作。 |
|
剛開始，我並沒真打算要做這個。挨家挨戶推銷雜誌在美國是數一數二困難又不討好的工作。但我的口袋已經見底了，這就是現實。早餐我只吃了玉米麥片。午晚餐合起來是一頓，不是熱狗就是漢堡。而我也不可能再從英國那邊拿到錢。沒錢的人沒得挑剔。有什麼工作就做什麼吧。 |
